Surviving Home Renovations: Storage Tips That Work (2025)

Man, I see you folks come in here all the time. You’ve got that wild look in your eyes. You’re covered in a fine layer of dust, and you’re trying to figure out how to fit a three-bedroom house’s worth of stuff into a one-bedroom apartment’s worth of space while the walls are literally coming down.

I get it. My name’s Mike, and before I ran this place, my wife and I decided it was a brilliant idea to redo our bathroom and kitchen at the same time. We didn’t speak in full sentences for a month. We ate takeout on the floor. I’m pretty sure we invented new swear words.

So, from one veteran of the dust wars to another, here’s my no-BS guide to keeping your stuff safe and your sanity intact.

First, You Gotta Get Mean with Your Stuff

I’m serious. Before you even look at a cardboard box, you need to have a come-to-Jesus meeting with your belongings. You’re about to move every single thing you own. Do you really want to move that pasta maker you used once in 2019? That stack of magazines? That shirt with the tag still on it?

Get three big garbage bags. One is for TRASH. One is for DONATIONS. One is for SELLING (if you’re ambitious). Be ruthless. If it doesn’t make your life better right now, it goes. This is the single most important step. It lightens the load, physically and mentally.

Packing: Don’t Just Throw It In a Box

This is where most people mess up. They just start shoving things in boxes. Chaos.

  • Get a bunch of Ziploc bags: I’m not kidding. Pack the contents of one kitchen drawer into a bag. Then put that bag in a bigger box. Now you’re not digging through a million loose things. You just grab the “junk drawer” bag and you’re done.
  • Label like your marriage depends on it: “Kitchen” is useless. Write “COFFEE STUFF – MUGS, FILTERS, COFFEE” or “KIDS’ SCHOOL UNIFORMS.” Be so specific it feels stupid. Trust me, at 6 AM when you’re late for work, you’ll be glad you did.
  • Pack a “First Night” Box: This is your survival kit. Pack it like you’re going camping in your own house. Toothpaste, phone chargers, a change of clothes, dog food, toilet paper, a bottle of wine, and the coffee maker. This box stays with you, in your car if you have to. Everything else can disappear.

Your House is About to Shrink

You think you have space now? Wait until your couch is in your kitchen and your bed is in the living room. It’s a nightmare.

Pick one room, one corner, one closet, and declare it a “Clean Zone.” Nothing from the Reno goes in there. This is your sanctuary. This is where you go to remember what a clean, dust-free surface looks like. Defend this space with your life.

Here’s the Real Talk Part

You can’t do this alone. Your house can’t handle it. Trying to live around all your furniture is a recipe for disaster. Stuff gets broken. Stuff gets dusty. You will trip over that coffee table for the hundredth time and want to scream.

This is where we come in. I’m not just saying this to get your business. I’m telling you as a guy who’s been there.

Renting a small storage unit here at Bristol VA Self Storage isn’t an extra expense. It’s an investment in your peace of mind. The day we dragged our sofa and big armchairs out of our house and into a unit was the day the renovation became manageable. The workers had space to work. We had space to breathe. We weren’t constantly cleaning dust off everything we owned.

It’s not just about storing things. It’s about giving yourself some breathing room. It’s about protecting the nice stuff you spent good money on. It’s about not having a nervous breakdown because you can’t walk to the bathroom without moving a bookcase.

You’ll Get Through This

I promise. It feels like it will never end, but it does. And when you’re finally done, and you’re standing in your beautiful new kitchen, you’ll be glad you did it right.

And when you come to pick your stuff up from us, it’ll be just like you left it—safe, clean, and ready to find a new home in your gorgeous, finished space.

So, take a deep breath. Be brutal with the purge. Pack smart. Claim your clean corner. And for goodness’ sake, give yourself a break. Get the stuff out of the house. Your future self will thank you.

Now go find that coffee. You’re gonna need it.
